FREYjA

Like a bird in the sky, a smile in your eyes, heaven for your soul…

              Interview with  FREYjA

How do you find ideas for your lyrics ?

Where do you find your musical inspiration ?

Through pain, suffering, the loss of loved ones, grief…  Life is a long journey and eventually we come back where we were really born, in that place born inside ourselves, where melancholy lives.

Why did you choose Paris ?

I didn’t, Paris chose me…

What is your favorite song in « The Siren’s Odyssey » album ?

        «Perfect World »

Why ?

To reply to « God botherers », these religious fanatics who attacked me in order to try to force their own vision of faith upon me when I was in a shopping mall, in Australia.

Do you believe in God?

Yes, and I am interested in Buddhism too. I like philosophy of Buddhism. For me, music is a form of peaceful spirituality. It opens to us a direct line and a spiritual contact with God. It equilibrates expression between our inner and outer voice.

A man… a girl…life…love…how do you explain troubles in love affairs ?

Men and women ! Peace starts at home. We will never find peace in the world…with others if we don’t find peace with ourselves and, in privacy, with our partner…

Please tell us something about your career?

I recorded the first two CDs in Australia. For my third one, I decided to record in France. In the studio, with the producers and the musicians, it went very well…magic of fate brought us together. Then chance encounters enabled me to sing in jazz clubs.

A super welcome ! How could I leave Paris ? In Australia, my producer who was my trompet player, told me : “There is one person in Paris who can help you-Chris Cody. A “top” musician who lives in Paris. We met in a café. We saw each other and soon realised we already knew each other ! In fact we attended the same French classes in Australia…and we even had met several times at dinners with friends. How funny that was and how destined it was !

Chris did help me to create the band FREYjA in Paris and he is too the co-producer of my third album…

            My « dream team »:

            Chris Cody – piano

            Bruno Rousselet - bass

Xavier Desandre-Navarre – drum and percussions

George Beckerich – trumpet and  flugelhorn

Concerning myself I started training in classic piano at the age of 5.  I wanted to be a concert pianist. I studied piano until I was 20. I continued my studies in Sydney’s music academy; I studied jazz there for the first time. My music, today, comes entirely from my heart and my convictions but I must confess that I find inspiration also in the music of other artists including : Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Tom Waits…

From your experience in Paris, what can you say to foreign students ?

To be very attentive and respectful of cultural differences, to be able to appreciate the small but very lovely traditional formalities that are typically French. That will make the difference in your integration and in the building of strong friendships. This observation is a little superficial but we must start somewhere. For instance in France, people always say : « Bonjour Madame or Bonjour Monsieur » when they come into a shop. If you don’t do it, you could offend them. Avoid abruptness and hurried relationships with your interlocutor. Courtesy and time are part of  French culture.
